Masters of Arts in Psychology

Overview

The M.A. Psychology program is a postgraduate course designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the field of psychology, with a specific focus in the areas of Counselling and Clinical Psychology. The uniqueness of this program is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and clinical training necessary to pursue careers as competent and ethical counselling psychologists/ clinical practitioners. The program combines theoretical foundations with hands-on training, preparing graduates to address psychological issues in diverse settings, such as schools, hospitals, organizations, and private practice.

The program seeks to

  • Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of psychological theories, principles, and evidence-based practices relevant to counselling and clinical psychology.
  • Develop students’ clinical assessment, diagnostic, and intervention skills for addressing a wide range of psychological issues in diverse populations.
  • Cultivate students’ self-awareness, cultural competence, and ethical decision-making abilities necessary for effective and responsible practice in the field.
  • Prepare students for professional licensure, certification, or further academic pursuits in psychology or related disciplines.

Duration: 2 years

  • Specialized Focus: Emphasis on counselling theories, therapeutic techniques, and the application of psychology to address emotional, behavioural, and mental health challenges
  • Practical Training: Supervised internships, role-plays, and case studies to enhance counselling skills and real-world application
  • Interdisciplinary Approach: Integration of psychological theories with elements of sociology, human development, and cultural studies
  • Research Opportunities: Scope to conduct independent research and contribute to the field of mental health
  • Holistic Development: Development of interpersonal skills, empathy, and ethical awareness for professional practice
  • The program will strengthen critical thinking, clinical analysis and diagnosis, psychological health issues, therapeutic skills, research skills, service learning and industry exposure
  • The program emphasizes on building a robust research culture and equipping students with clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic skills. The program will include internships, experiential learning through field visits, outdoor activities, dissertation writing, learning through social outreach and collaborative academic programs,  talks, conferences, workshops and seminars
  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related disciplines (e.g., Social Work, Human Development, or Sociology) from a recognized university under UGC
  • A bachelor’s degree with Honours/ Honours with Research with a minimum of 160 credits for a 1-year/2-semester master’s programme at level 6.5 on the NHEQF. (National Higher Education Qualification Framework or a 3-year/6-semester bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 120 credits for a 2-year/4-semester Master’s programme at level 6.5 on the NHEQF or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 160 credits for a 2-year/4-semester Master’s programme at level 7 of NHEQF
  • A student is eligible for a Master’s in Psychology programme corresponding to either major or minor(s) discipline in UG Programme
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates must secure at least 50-55% aggregate marks in their undergraduate degree
  • Graduation with a degree in B.A/B.A (Hons) in Psychology with a minimum percentage of 50% at the level of graduation is required. Students with a graduation degree in other disciplines can also apply for MA Psychology. However they would be required to complete one month bridge course prior to the beginning of the course
  • Based on the fulfilment of eligibility criteria selected candidates will be required to participate in an personal interview
